Smoke Alarm Installation
Queensland’s final staged deadline is 1 January 2027, when remaining domestic dwellings must have compliant interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms.

Queensland requirements
All remaining Queensland domestic dwellings must comply by 1 January 2027. Required smoke alarms are photoelectric and interconnected, with placement requirements that depend on bedrooms, hallways, storeys and paths of travel.
What an installation can involve
- Assessing existing alarm type, age and location.
- Planning required bedroom, hallway and storey coverage.
- Replacing expired or unsuitable alarms.
- Interconnecting the required alarm system.
- Checking practical placement around fans, air-conditioning and ceiling geometry.
Important: the correct number and location cannot be determined from a simple room count alone. The dwelling layout matters.
Official information
The Queensland Fire Department publishes the current smoke alarm requirements and location guidance.
